Yet prying Tina away from the lure of Africa is not a simple matter. Tina has so insinuated herself into the life and rituals of Africa, she has even caught the eye of the local village chief's far older son, who perceives the little girl as a potential wife.

Christine worries that growing up in the remote wilds of Africa has had a detrimental effect on Tina, who has taken to roaming the African plains with only her beloved lion companion King (Zamba the Lion) by her side. Now divorced, Robert and Christine are still bound by 11-year-old Tina (Pamela Franklin). Set amidst the exotic flora and fauna of a wildlife reserve in Kenya, the film unfolds as Christine and Robert grapple with the best way - and place - for their willful, independent, almost feral daughter to grow up. In The Lion (1962) a successful American lawyer Robert Hayward (William Holden) estranged from his wife Christine (Capucine) is called back to Africa over fears for their young daughter's future. Facing the inevitable, Bullitt gives Christine permission to return to America with Robert and their child. This act affects Bullitt's relationship with Tina, who now accepts Robert as her father. After the lion has fatally mauled Oriunga, Bullitt is forced to kill it. When the son chooses Tina's pet as his victim, the young girl orders the beast to kill the warrior.

The chief, however, tells him that he will never be a chief until he has killed a lion. Once recovered, the chief returns to his tribe and his son, Oriunga, who has wanted to take over the tribe and claim Tina as a wife. (Her greatest friend is a full-grown lion she has raised from a cub.) The affection between Robert and Christine gradually rekindles, and Robert adds to the mounting tension when he violates a tribal law by saving the life of a dying chief who has been abandoned. Christine asks Robert to help bring up their 11-year-old daughter, Tina, who accepts primitive tribal customs.

Following a summons from his ex-wife, Christine, American lawyer Robert Hayward arrives at the East African game reserve supervised by John Bullitt, Christine's new husband.
